The steady, ongoing work produced from wedding photography generates the majority of new clients for most photography studios and freelance photographers. A wedding photographer will need to comfortable with the following activities & skills:
Candid shots (photojournalistic) and posed shots
Making slides, prints, and slideshows (digital or otherwise)
Traditional albums
Taking shots in the outdoors at a party, beach, or rustic locale
Snapping shots indoors at a temple or church
In the late 1860’s in America, couples started hiring photographers and posing at the wedding. The art form of photography for the wedding was created by Joseph Nicéphore Niépce in 1826. However, the idea of live action shots and of capturing the event itself came up after the Second World War. Often, the photographers would just show up inconspicuously at a wedding, snap the photos, and venture to sell them later on to the family. This forced studios to start covering the events, lest they be booted out by freelance photographers.
After the wedding is over, a small time lapse is incurred, and, thereafter the photographer shows “proofs” to the couple. The proofs can be in the form of prints, thumbnail galleries, or all of the images on CD-ROM. They may also make separate galleries or slideshows, and they’re sometimes themed.
Photographers may sell additional prints to the couple through a web site with thumbnail galleries and an e-commerce back-end, often in conjunction with a vendor or broker website that charges a commission for each print purchase.
The common types of wedding photography include the photojournalistic realism and spontaneous photographer behavior of some, the classic or traditional posed method, and a hybrid of the two called fashion-based wedding photography.
In big cities, there are often studios devoted to wedding photography because photography for the wedding is such a mammoth market in metropolitan areas. People are always moving in and out and getting married. Take a look at a portfolio of the photographer’s former work for assurance.
The Wedding and Portrait Photographers International (WPPI), the Professional Photographers of America (PPA), and, especially, the Wedding Photojournalists Association (WPA) offer training, professional support, and tips to member photographers.

Help answer the question about Wedding Photography
Wedding photography?I am planning a 4-26-08 wedding. It's going along very nicely, and it's turning out to be very inexpensive due to a lot of connections I have. For example, my dad is a member at the hall where we are having our receptions, so we get a 50% discount.
Photography is the one thing I don't have taken care of yet. The places I've looked into START at $2000, and that's without the prints. There is no way we can afford to spend that much. Our parents are already helping as much as they possibly can, so asking them is out of the question.
Does anyone have any advice on how to get quality photos that don't put us WAY over budget? Thanks!

Personally, I use Canon 40D and 5DMkII. Its Canon V Nikon really (a bit like PC V Mac). Both will get the job done and it comes down to personal preference.
Though, more important than the camera itself is:
1. The lenses. A poor quality lens on the best camera will result in a poor image.
2. The ability of the photographer. As stated, all the best gear in the world cant make a bad photo a good one.
Ask the client what they are looking for. Use your smarts – don't shoot up at people on the alter, for example – you wind up with unflattering shots up people's noses.
Make sure to take photos other than formals. Formals are nice, but that quiet moment after the ceremony where they look at each other is nicer.
You don't say if you're the bride or the photographer – the advice would be better if we knew.
Make sure that you look at people before you shoot. It the father of the groom had a big hairy mole on the left side of his face, switch the bride and groom so that side is away from the camera. If you look before you line them up, it's much less embarrassing.

It depends on what exactly you want and the level of professionalism you want. It also depends on your location. If you were wanting just some formal poses of you and the wedding party on a cd for you to print on your own, and it took approximately an hour, I'd charge $100. I also put them online with a password so everyone can see the images at no extra charge. If you wanted prints, I charge $20 per 8×10 size sheet. Which means you could get 1 8×10 or 2 5×7's or 4 3×5's or 9 wallets on a sheet. If you wanted an album, I would charge anywhere from $200 on up for a hardcover book type or higher for leather bound albums. If you wanted a dvd to play on a dvd player of the images I'd charge $150 . I am in Denver, co and I am just restarting my wedding photography business so my prices are a bit lower than those with more experience, but since I earned a degree in photography I charge more than the cheapest photographers. Oh ya and I travel if expenses are paid.
When hiring a photographer I should add that it is important to like their vision. The reason to hire a professional is that he/she sees the world differently than someone with a fancy digital camera and a photo editing program. Believe me if all it took was a camera and a computer everyone would do it. And yes I admit everyone tries, but if you compare their pictures with a professionals of the same subject you will be amazed at what a professional does compared to the amatuer.
Hope that helps

Incredible! He looks so life like. Just amazing…and what a beautiful subject
You’re really good man. You’ve got excellent talent.
Maybe.
If all of your lenses are AF-S then perhaps you would be able to get away with it.
A better choice might be a D80 or D90. (It's best to avoid toy cameras in professional situations.)
Brilliant Willy, Just Brilliant =D
I just check your portfolio… your pictures have terrible quality… You have some nice ideas for wedding photos, pictures are not bad, I would say much better than most of the wedding "photographers" (read money makers) I know… but you MUST start thinking about better equipment… pentax is not a equipment for you.. you need better camera, and better lenses… camera for start: even one of the cheaper canon brand Rebel XTI or XTS but lenses only Top Shelf Lseries… I know its not cheap but wedding photographer making good money so let call this investment
than you`ll have better quality pictures, and start shoot in RAW and than process them to JPG….
It depends on what the handmade ones looked like but if they were about the same price I would probably go with handmade.
Excellent work. Pleasure to watch. Perfect music
